The Truly Damned

Vampire

rakes are the truly damned
and limited to the briefest sins
of happiness:

like the eyes of women,
like the way they walk,
like the fire of their lips
in winter,
in wanting,
like all the skin
of maidens and mothers,
the quenched thirst,
the cool thighs and nails.

Damned

again and again
by every
father’s curse,
boyfriend’s punch,
husband’s gun.

Damned

with an unmistakable grin:
everything laughing,
everything burning,
everything hell.
