The Way You Ride

Quiet Beaches

I unhook our horses
From a seaside fetching post
Under a fresh spring sky,

My chestnut snorts the salt
With a “chug-chug-chug”
When I touch his muscular neck,

Your Appaloosa lifts her ears
At the sound of waves
And sports her speckled rear.

“Need a lift?” I say,
You smile and spin yourself up
With a toss of your hair:

“Try to keep up” you laugh,
Then pull your sweater
Over your head to naked skin—

Throw it in my face,
And gallop far from sight…
In the morning sand.
